When we exercise the brain increases the level of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine and forwards messages to our nervous system to cheer us up. However, it isn’t essential to run a marathon to get these benefits. It can be more effective to perform short bursts of energy to give your wellbeing a boost. Anything that keeps you moving and steps up your heart rate will give you a buzz. Aerobic exercise such as walking, cycling and swimming can all boost serotonin levels. Working out with weights with shorter gaps in between sets can give you the same boost.
Yoga and Pilates will gently increase serotonin levels and have the added calming neurobiological benefits on the mind.
Try different things, I add light weights or yoga to my routine. Perhaps you would enjoy dancing, it’s amazing how quickly time can pass when you are enjoying yourself.
If you want the motivation of exercising with other people, it doesn’t have to include joining a gym, there are lots of local exercise classes and running groups that meet up weekly. You can check online or pop into your local library.
