January 1 - Croatia begins to adopt the euro and joins the Schengen Area.
Lula da Silva is sworn in as President of Brazil.
January 6 - The start of the twenty-fifth edition of the Arab Gulf Cup Football Championship in the city of Basra, southern Iraq.
January 8 - Crowds storm Congress, the Federal Supreme Court and a presidential palace in Brazil to protest the results of the presidential elections.
January 10 - An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale strikes near the shores of the Tanimbar Islands in Indonesia.
January 15 – A plane crashes in Pokhara, Nepal, killing 68 people.

January 30 - More than 100 people are killed and more than 200 wounded in a suicide bombing inside a mosque in Peshawar, Pakistan.

1 February – Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) reaches its closest approach to Earth at a distance of 0.28 AU (42 million km), visible to the naked eye.
February 3: Chile extends a state of emergency over wildfires that have burned up to 8,000 hectares, killed at least 24 people and injured 1,100, and also declares a disaster in Bío-Bío province amid a summer heat wave.
